Also, we would like to let you know that it is very likely that Congress will lower the federal estate tax exemption soon. In order to maximize your current tax exemption, we recommend creating and funding an irrevocable trust before the end of the year. Funding an irrevocable trust will allow you to make a substantial gift to your descendants and retain control over how the funds are used. If you have an existing life insurance trust, that can be repurposed for large gifts.
This type of planning takes a significant amount of time. Accordingly, if you wish to make a large gift in 2021, we encourage you to reach out to our office as soon as possible. We are currently booking appointments about four weeks out. Stay safe and healthy.
